The Web Designer/Developer .
- Creates and maintains web pages, user interfaces, interactive content presentations, and news applications for the website and mobile devices.
- Understands how to balance what can be done with what should be done, can speak to both and offer options for each to meet goals.
- Pioneers innovative web interactions and applications for presenting news and information.
- Codes from wireframes and/or graphic mockups and/or collaborates with other design roles such as UX Designers and Art Directors.
- Collaborates with creative, engineering, news, marketing, and product teams on concept development, prototypes, technology innovations and process improvements.
- Researches and identifies evolving media, technology and design innovations and opportunities; collaborates with Manager and across the organization to assess and implement new ideas.
Minimum Requirements (including physical capabilities):
- Expertise in creating standards compliant and cross platform/browser compatible HTML/CSS websites
- Experience with Javascript and Javascript based frameworks (such as jQuery)
- Commitment to web standards, accessibility, and user experience
- Actively driven to keep up with forward-thinking technologies (CSS3, HTML5, etc.)
- Highly organized and detail oriented, with strong problem solving skills
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively, prioritize tasks and maintain deadlines
Other helpful skills:
- Experience working within Content Management System and creating templates or themes
- Experience with responsive design frameworks.
- PHP / MySQL (LAMP Stack) familiarity
- Version Control (Git/Github)
- An understanding of UX best practices
- Graphic design skills and familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite
Preferred Experience:
- AA, BA or BFA in web design, web development, interaction design, or comparable professional work experience.
- Minimum 3+ years experience in a related functional role, developing web design solutions and supporting projects with variable complexity, scale and impact.
- Experienced producing functional prototypes, front-end code for user interfaces and functionality, and interactive presentations or applications.
- Experienced working on projects of high complexity under the direction of a Design Lead, Web Design Manager, or senior design team member.
- Must have an appreciation for journalism’s place in society.
